🌟 The 8 Word Teams!
Every word in an English sentence has a job. These jobs are called parts of speech. There are 8 main word teams![youtube]
Imagine words are players in a playground game. Each player helps make a sentence fun and clear. 🛝
1. Noun — The Name Tag 🏷️
A noun names a person, place, animal, or thing.[learningcorner]
- Riya is eating a mango. 🥭
- The dog runs in the park. 🐶
- My ball is blue. ⚽
Quick trick: If you can name it, it may be a noun!
2. Pronoun — The Noun Helper 🤝
A pronoun is a small word that takes the place of a noun, so we do not repeat the same name again and again.
- Riya has a doll. She loves it.
- Tom has a kite. He flies it. 🪁
- The children are hungry. They want snacks.
Common pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, they.
3. Verb — The Action Hero 💥
A verb tells what someone or something does. It can show an action or a state of being.[learningcorner]
- The baby laughs. 😂
- Birds fly. 🐦
- I eat pizza. 🍕
- My teddy is soft. 🧸
Quick trick: Can you do it? Then it may be a verb!
4. Adjective — The Describer 🎨
An adjective tells us more about a noun. It may tell colour, size, shape, number, or feeling.[learningcorner]
- I have a red balloon. 🎈
- The tiny kitten sleeps. 🐱
- We ate a sweet cake. 🍰
- The happy boy danced.
Without adjectives, everything sounds a little plain!
5. Adverb — The Action Booster 🚀
An adverb gives extra information about a verb. It can tell how, when, or where something happens. Adverbs often end in -ly, but not always.[thehomeschoolmom]
- The rabbit hops quickly. 🐰
- Please sit quietly. 🤫
- We will play tomorrow.
- Come here!
Ask: “How does it happen?” The answer may be an adverb.
6. Preposition — The Position Word 📍
A preposition shows where something is or how things are connected.[learningcorner]
- The cat is under the table. 🐱
- The book is on the desk. 📘
- The ball is between two chairs. ⚽
- We walk to school. 🎒
Common prepositions: in, on, under, near, behind, between, to.
7. Conjunction — The Joiner 🔗
A conjunction joins words or ideas together.
- I like apples and bananas. 🍎🍌
- Do you want juice or milk?
- I was tired, but I finished my homework. ✏️
Remember these super joiners: and, but, or, because, so.
8. Interjection — The Feeling Pop! 💬
An interjection is a short word that shows a sudden feeling.
- Wow! That rainbow is beautiful. 🌈
- Ouch! I bumped my knee.
- Hurray! It is my birthday! 🎂
- Oh no! My ice cream fell. 🍦
Interjections often have an exclamation mark because they are full of feeling!
